Homeowners insurance is an essential protection to have, and you should also understand how it works in cases of storm damage. No one’s home is immune to storms, so it’s time to ask yourself, “Does homeowners insurance cover storm damage?”
Yes, the typical homeowners’ insurance covers storm damage, but the coverage is limited. It covers damage caused by hail, lightning, and effects of high wind, like healthy trees falling and flying debris. It is a partial coverage; you may need an extra insurance policy for damage resulting from floods and earthquakes.
Let’s go into what storm damage means in the context of insurance and what it generally covers. We’ll also discuss the factors that may affect homeowners’ coverage for storm damage.

Home insurance companies always specify which weather events are covered under their policies. Most insurers in Kentucky and the rest of the country only cover damages caused by “named perils,” which means specific events listed in the policy.
General Coverage for Storm Damage
In general, homeowners insurance policies cover storm damage to your house and other structures on your property, such as sheds, garages, fences, and swimming pools. It also covers personal belongings damaged or destroyed by severe weather conditions, like furniture and electronics.
However, the coverage for storm damage may vary depending on several factors, like your policy type, location, and the storm’s severity. For instance, you most likely need to purchase additional coverage specifically for floods or earthquakes.
Specifics of Roof Damage Coverage
A. Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Roof Damage Caused by Storms?
Yes, homeowners insurance typically covers roof damage caused by storms. Your policy will likely protect your roof from destruction unless it’s explicitly excluded in the terms and conditions outlined in it.
B. Common Types of Roof Damage Covered
Some typical types of roof damage covered by homeowners insurance include:
- Hail damage.
- Wind damage.
- Ice or snow accumulation causing structural issues.
However, it’s essential to note that some policies may limit coverage for older roofs or roofs made with certain materials. It’s always best to review your policy carefully to understand your coverage fully.
C. Key Considerations and Limitations
When it comes to roof damage coverage, there are a few things homeowners should keep in mind:

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Storm Damage Tree Removal
Roofing insurance claims for storm damage may also include tree removal and repairs. Homeowners insurance typically covers removing the tree from your property and repairing any damage.
Conditions for Coverage and Exclusions
All insurance policies have specific conditions for coverage and exclusions. It’s essential to review these carefully to understand what may or may not be covered in your policy.
Some common conditions for coverage related to tree removal and storm damage include:
- The tree must have caused damage to your home or other insured structures, such as garages, sheds, or fences.
- The tree must have fallen because of sudden, natural events like lightning strikes or strong winds, not because the tree was old and neglected.
- Some policies may limit coverage for tree removal to only certain types of trees or specific areas of your property, so review your policy carefully.
On the other hand, some common exclusions for tree removal and storm damage repairs can include:
- Damage is caused by a tree that is not on your property, such as one that falls from a neighbor’s yard.
- Damage to other structures on your property that are not specifically covered under your policy, such as driveways or walkways.
Importance of Proper Documentation for Storm Damage Insurance Claims
Accurate and complete documentation will be useful when submitting a claim for tree removal and storm damage reimbursement. Take photos of the fallen tree and any resulting damage, and keep records of any expenses you incur during the removal and repair process.
It’s also essential to report the incident to your insurance company immediately. Failure to do so may result in a denial of coverage or delays in the claims process.

Pam - Lancaster, KY 40444
After a horrible storm back on Feb 9, 2023, we like so many others watched pieces of our roof being peeled off like it was raining shingles!I placed a call to Jacob's Ladder. In no time a very knowledgeable lady climbs up on our very steep roof to access the damage. She was very helpful and explained the totally process and what we needed to do and what they would be doing. They patched several huge areas, because of the colder weather the replacement of the entire roof needed a bit warmer temperatures for the shingles to stick well. It took several weeks in order for our job to get scheduled at the right time. It took 4 days to complete because of the size of the job. They were respectful and hardworking. They cleaned up around the property and were very meticulous! The owners were here at all times. We highly recommend this company!
