Slate roofing is a popular choice for many home renovations and new-builds, mainly due to its durability, unique and rustic look, and extreme value for money. Originally, slate roofing was used on perhaps larger and more expensive houses and commercial buildings, serving as a durable and stylish roofing alternative to other available options.
So, with this information in mind, the remainder of this blog post will highlight several benefits of slate roofing, beginning with durability and lifespan and how this benefits the homeowner (i.e., you).
Durability and lifespan
Slate is one of the few roofing materials that is super durable and long-lasting. Slate is a rock that is derived from volcanic ash via a process called metamorphism. This is why it’s so strong, withstanding severe weather and years of use when installed correctly.
At a very minimum, you should expect to get between seventy-five and one hundred years out of a new roof made from slate. However, you could easily get more, but this does depend on the climate and environment in which you live in.

Unlike other roofing options, slate roofing is completely fireproof. This increases the safety of your home and also increases longevity, so long as it’s taken care of. Nonetheless, its impressive prowess is reflected within its usually higher price bracket.
Slate does not fade or worsen overtime
Slate roofing is a timely option, very rarely showing signs of wear and tear, including fading or changing of color. If you can stomach the slightly more expensive investment, you’ll be well taken care of, both in regards to aesthetics and structural durability.
The location and environment in which your home is located should definitely play a part in your roofing material choice. Nonetheless, slate can withstand various climates, including severe heat, storms, the cold, and anything in-between.
The bottom line
Next time you consider re-roofing your home, you should consider slate roofing. Not only does it look great and is aesthetically pleasing, but it’s super durable and potential lifelong investment, lasting upwards of seventy-five years and maybe more.

In May of 2022 a very damaging hail and windstorm pretty much destroyed my entire roof in Lexington Kentucky. Due to an insurance company that did not want to pay Jacobs Ladder was able to negotiate payment for an entirely new roof, decking and all which now meets current codes. Final work was completed January of 2023. Now my roof which leaked into my kitchen from May 2022 through December of 2022 has ceased to leak onto my kitchen floor. Their work is so good it withstood the 100 mph plus winds of 3rd March 2023.
