Does Walking on Your Roof Damage It?

by | Jan 21, 2022 | Roofing

Whether you’re after a rooftop picnic or looking to do some work on your roof yourself, a general concern is whether or not it’s safe.

Typically, walking on your roof will not damage it. However, we do not recommend going up on your roof unless trained to do so.

Not only is this dangerous, but if you’re attempting to fix a broken tile, or other components, then you may only make things worse.

Oftentimes it’s best to leave it to the professionals, such as the team at Jacob’s Ladder.

Leave it to the pros and call for a roofing inspection

Walking on your roof can be dangerous – there are several hazards, especially if you’re climbing up in high winds, rain, or other severe weather conditions.

Therefore, we’d always recommend working with a professional roofer when possible.

A few tips for walking on your roof safely

For those of you that still want to climb on your roof, the least we can do is provide you with a few useful tips:

  • Watch where you’re walking
  • Wear the right footwear and clothing
  • Don’t carry tools in your hands – use a toolbelt if possible
  • Secure the ladder

Each of these tips will now be explained in more detail. So, if you’re brave enough to be walking on your roof, then at least you’ll be safe.

Watch where you’re walking

It may sound simple, but it’s crucial to watch where you’re walking on your roof. With slopes to tackle, tiles, and potentially other debris, there are all sorts of hazards.

Watch where you’re going, and you’ll be just fine.

Wear the right footwear and clothing

If you are going to be walking on roof, then ensure to wear the right footwear and clothing.

Scaling your roof with a pair of converse and joggers is a recipe for disaster – not only will you have little grip, but you’re more likely to get caught on obstacles, perhaps resulting in a fall or other accident.

Don’t carry tools in your hands

This is a roofing101 – don’t carry tools in your hands when walking on your roof if possible. With tools in your hands, you’re unable to scale a roof and catch yourself if required.

So, if you’re going to make a habit of walking on your roof, consider investing in a tool belt at the very minimum.

Secure the ladder

Finally, another beginner tip, but once that’s often neglected – secure the ladder! This is especially important if working alone as if it falls, that’s you stuck on the roof.

While these tips may seem simple, you’d be surprised just how many people don’t follow these basic pieces of advice.

After a horrible storm back on Feb 9, 2023, we like so many others watched pieces of our roof being peeled off like it was raining shingles!I placed a call to Jacob's Ladder. In no time a very knowledgeable lady climbs up on our very steep roof to access the damage. She was very helpful and explained the totally process and what we needed to do and what they would be doing. They patched several huge areas, because of the colder weather the replacement of the entire roof needed a bit warmer temperatures for the shingles to stick well. It took several weeks in order for our job to get scheduled at the right time. It took 4 days to complete because of the size of the job. They were respectful and hardworking. They cleaned up around the property and were very meticulous! The owners were here at all times. We highly recommend this company!
